People of St Pete: Deneen Wyman

In a stroke of random good luck, Deneen Wyman’s name was passed onto me by a reader. They thought that Deneen was an interesting woman doing some fantastic things to help empower young girls and maybe the Green Bench Monthly would like to talk with her.  And boy oh boy they were right! She was a perfect subject for our September back-to-school time issue.

I loved sitting down with Deneen. We talked so much that I think both of our Central Coffee Shoppe breakfasts got a bit cold. I know my bacon did 😉 As usual my word count didn’t leave room for me to cover everything. So here’s just a few things I couldn’t fit in.

We bonded over our shared belief that young girls need to know more about the strong, fierce, and fabulous women that came before. The study of History too often sidelines the important roles played by women, especially women of color. Black women have been on the forefront of every major progressive change in history and a brighter light needs to be shined on that reality. We both know that it’s easier to imagine a path if you’ve seen someone that looks like you doing it! And Deneen is definitely doing her part!

When she and her girls visited Bethune-Cookman University, the girls wore t-shirts that stated: I Am a Black Child. I Am the Future.

She initiated a pen pal program between her 4th and 5th grade girls and girls in the Gibbs High School program.

She has a very strong faith that God has a plan for her.

Deneen is also an accomplished singer. Her voice is absolutely beautiful!

She has impeccable style.

Her smile lights up a room.

She is the kind of person that makes you think I should be more like her!

She is a delight.

a new day

a new day begins ~

unfurling a path to choose ~

hero or coward ~

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Every day we make a million little choices that define who we are. Those choices built on each other and create a picture of “self.” It’s tempting to assume at some point that our picture is done. We confidently or defiantly (or sometimes with shame) declare “what you see is what you get” or as Popeye would say “I am what I am.” Or is it “I yam what I yam”?
Of course some things can’t be changed or even be easily altered, but that doesn’t mean your picture of self is finished. Every day offers us an opportunity to make a change. It may be so tiny that no one notices or so big that the world takes notice. Not everyone will like it. Not everyone who likes it will agree on its merits. Some people will care too much. And some people won’t care at all. And some people will think you don’t have the right to make the change at all. But regardless what other people think or say, your choice means that your self-portrait will be different from yesterday. To me, that idea is daunting but ultimately wonderful. In a world where so many things are beyond my scope of immediate power, it is empowering to believe I CAN change my self-portrait.
To KNOW that my choices can change MY PATH!
With that sense of Wonder Woman like empowerment I should be making great strides towards a better me. And that better me should be on the forefront of the resistance kickin’ ass! Right? And in my perfect world, every morning I would think about my choices. What do I want the world to see when they view my portrait? What do I want to see? What path am I choosing today? How will I make a better world today? But, of course, it’s not a perfect world. And I’m terrible at self-reflection! And the path towards a better world gets cluttered with Twitter rants and despair. And. And. And…
Some days, choosing to be kind to myself and others is the best I can do. (And really isn’t that the very least we can do for ourselves and humanity!)
So today, I’ll try to practice what I preach.
Tomorrow I plan on looking for a golden lasso or maybe a pair of cuffs!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Usually I’m a words before pictures kinda gal. But these photos (shot by my husband this morning on his morning ride) inspired my haiku today. I am constantly gobsmacked by the beauty around me. I love to travel but I’m lucky to live in such a special place. People come from all over the world to visit my home. And when I’m feeling hopeless about so many things, that beauty reminds me to be hopeful. Even if we don’t survive, the Earth will keep spinning. Its beauty will survive

Change Reality: Rebel

Change as Metaphor ~

Rebellion as Simile ~

Reality Bites ~

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We share this planet with 7.5 BILLION people. As only one person among those 7.5 billion, I sometimes feel like nothing I do matters. I wake up nearly every morning dreading the news. What new kind of insanity is taking us one step closer to doom? And then I try to remind myself to take at least a small step forward. As one person, that one small step may not make an enormous difference. But add my small action to other people’s small actions and you might get a REVOLUTION. So don’t give up. Vote. Volunteer. Smile. Extend a hand. Educate. Become educated. Run for office. Run. Do yoga. Stand up. Kneel. Video. Write a letter. Make a call. Take a step. Make a difference.
a love story told ~
Many many years ago, a girl met a boy at a bar. All summer long, they drank rum and danced to David Bowie and sang with the Heads. Then summer ended. But the girl didn’t go home. She stayed because like Chaka Khan says “Ain’t Nobody.”
Ain’t nobody
Loves me better
Makes me happy
Makes me feel this way
Ain’t nobody
Loves me better than you
Happy Anniversary to my love. Happy Birthday to my love.
