A Change is Gonna Come (Hopefully)

The world spins around

Bringing a spark of new hope

As fuel for the flames

I’ve been WP MIA for a couple of weeks. Between the heat and the constant rain and the general state of our world, I’ve been uninspired or depressed or lethargic. “Whatever” has been my go-to feeling of late. Ugh. But I’m trying to lift myself out of it. So thanks to  Sue’s beautiful photo challenge for giving me a hopeful image to go along with the spark of hope coming out of Puerto Rico.

I’ll leave you with my title inspiration-Sam Cooke’s “A Change is Gonna Come.”

Peace.

Born This Way

What would he say when he saw them? Sparkly and pink, they matched her t-shirt and her lip gloss. Or would have, if she’d been brave enough to wear lip gloss. Baby steps. That’s her plan. Painted nails today. Maybe painted lips next week.

What was she so afraid of? She needed to live her true life. She needed to tell him! And she would. Soon.

Still, she remembered his menacing tone before last year’s talent show. “No son of mine is going to strut around like a painted whore!”

So, less Gaga. And more … what?

Baby steps.

Metaphorically Speaking …

I’m currently in research mode, so the book on my desk is Raymond Arsenault’s St. Petersburg and the Florida Dream. Following Linda’s  directions, I closed my eyes, flipped it open, and pointed. I landed on the description of a photo from circa 1917: “transporting crates of oranges.” Thus, this deeply probing look at my interior life 😉

Plus consider this, my Wear Orange for Gun Safety contribution.

Don’t Call Me Daisy

Awaiting their time

To spread their wings and take flight

The dashing pair sleep

This buggy haiku was inspired by seeing these rascals (pictured above) firmly stuck to the side of a building last night while walking home from dinner. Social media posting help me identify them as dasychira meridionalis. Honestly I’m still creeped out by them but I wish them well as they transition to this.

And thanks to Ronovan Writes for the perfect prompts (hope/dash) for my new buggy friends! I substituted awaiting for hoping because I liked the way it sounded.

once again …

moments of silence
commemorating the dead

kneeling silently
to send our thoughts and prayers

silent bows of surrender

Once again … twelve more murders to add to our list of shame. Twelve more people gone because our so-called leaders refuse to stand up to the NRA. Twelve more deaths that will be met with the useless platitudes. Twelve more families to add to the seemingly unending list.  Twelve more ….

Thanks to Linda’s SoCS prompt for giving me a forum for my silent screaming.
