Next Door Neighbors

“Why do you always think the worst of people? Maybe she had some leftover plants and she thought you might like them. Just a generous neighborly gesture.”

Are you really that stupid? Did you not see the pristine white water can? Or read her Next Door “suggestions” about how some people are not doing their part to “beautify” the neighborhood? It’s clearly a declaration of war.

But instead of saying any of those things, I agreed, “Of course, I’m sure you’re right dear. I’ll be sure to thank her.”

Nothing says thank you like a three-ton delivery of manure.

if I could be me

If you could be someone else for a day, who would you be, and why?

if I could be me

but wiser, softer, kinder

quiescent no more

the arrogance of youth shed

my chrysalis cracked open

I’m sure that “What I See” is deeply connected to my own recent loss (of my dad) but (to me) she looks so unbearably sad.

New Hope

Rising from the depths,

the solo flame meets daylight.

In concert, they join

to purge the night’s dark shadows.

Illuminating new hope.

It’s been a long time since I’ve been here, but I’m determined to make time in 2023! So thanks to MindLoveMiserysMenagerie’s Photo Challenge and Linda Hill’s JusJotJan challenge for getting me back in the game. Please visit their sites for guidelines for the challenges and for some great writing.

Here’s to purging the shadows!

Un’altra notte rossa

All around me, conversations swell. I understand little but instead of seeming cacophonous, the words soothe. They distract from my reality until the prosecco dulls the pain.

Then the old woman who runs the osteria stands over me, “Ciligie”?

Seeing the cherries shakes me from my stupor.

She continues, “Devi rimanere per La Notte Rossa.”

The Red Night.

Stuck in an unrelenting loop, I had forgotten the world moves on. Ciliegie abound. And the people celebrate. But not us.

The cherries taunt me with their promise of sweetness but my mind fills with another red night as darkness falls.
